Nigerian children have been advised to cultivate the habit of reading so as to secure a brighter future for themselves. This was the high point of messages delivered during the celebration of #Giving Tuesday 2015 at Methodist Primary School III, Oke Ado, Ibadan, organized by the Rotary Club of Ibadan Onireke Neighborhood.

#Giving Tuesday is a global day dedicated to giving back to humanity. It is a day to promote giving and philanthropy around the world. On 1st December, 2015, the Rotary Club of Ibadan Onireke Neighborhood observed and joined the global celebration of #Giving Tuesday at Methodist Primary School III, Ayankoya, Oke Ado Ibadan, a community public school of about 200 pupils.

The event began at noon with a brief introduction of Rotary International and Rotary’s Basic & Literacy Project by the Club President, Mr. Adedotun Amori. This was immediately followed by a short motivational talk and book reading session facilitated by Dr. Adebayo Kolade, a prolific and established writer who became a published author since his schoolboy days. He read to the pupils from his book titled Iyortshe and the Gang, while the pupils listened with rapt attention.

The book reading session was largely interactive as it also involved the pupils who were given books to read and encouraged to explain what they read. There also was poetry reading by pupils during the session. The pupils were visibly inspired. Gifted pupils in writing and illustrating were identified, and a plan to guide them in getting published is being put together. One of the pupils had in fact penned a story complete with illustrations.

Afterwards, storybooks and dictionaries were given to pupils who participated in the interactive book reading session. Books were also donated to the School to start up a Book Club for the pupils and to engender the reading culture.

The Rotarians and friends of the Rotary Club of Ibadan Onireke Neighborhood gave out notebooks, pencils, pens, biscuits, candies and noodles were served to all the pupils of the school.

At the end of the event which lasted for two hours, the Headteacher of the School, Mrs Layo-Isinkaye was full of gratitude to the Rotary Club and Rotarians for selecting the School for such kind gestures and making tremendous impact on the pupils all of whom were just hearing about Rotary for the very first time. It was overwhelming joy for me when the pupils all shouted in unison: “Thank you Rotary!”
